In 1944 studied Romance philology at the university in Berlin. In 1946-1949 worked as a translator for the Austrian office of the United States Information Service.

She started her career as a journalist at the Rot-Weiß-Rot radio station and at the magazines Der Optimist and Heute. After her first works for the press in Vienna she travelled to Paris to be a journalist of the Magnum photo agency. In 1951 she moved to London. In 1953-54 she worked as Henri Cartier-Bresson's assistant. In 1955 she was accepted as a member in Magnum. She took photographs in several countries; she worked a lot in Spain, Middle East, Russia, China. Her photographs were published in Life, Paris Match, Holiday, Saturday Evening Post.

Her first book entitled Guerre a la Tristesse was published in 1956 and she had her first solo exhibition in Vienna. She has published several books, among others: In Russia (1969), In the Country (1977), Portraits (1986) Donau (1995). Her solo exhibitions were arranged by famous museums.

In 1962 she moved to the United States and married to the dramatist, Arthur Miller. In 1984 the honorary degree of Hartford University was conferred on her, in 1991 her oeuvre was honoured with the Austrian State award. Her latest book, a comprehensive monography - Inge Morath: Photographs 1952-1992 - was published in 1992.
