In 1956 he started his apprenticeship at the optician of his hometown. A year later he travelled to Paris and showed his pictures to Louis Foucherand, who employed him as an assistant from 1958, he photographed Paris and worked as a still-photographer at film shootings. In 1959 he joined the Dalmas agency, as a portrait photographer he took pictures of stars and was regularly commissioned to do press photography.

In 1960 he travelled to Algeria to photograph the desert and the events of the Algerian war. From 1962 he spent his military service as the photographer of the army. He made his first film reportage in 1963 on Venezuela, later he photographed in Saigon.

In 1966 he was one of the founder and from 1973 the of Gamma photo agency. In 1968 he photographed Nixon's campaign for the presidential elections and Biafra. In 1970 he went to work in Libya. In 1971 his book of his pictures taken in Chile is awarded the Robert Capa golden medal. His first solo exhibition was arranged in Paris, his pictures from Chile were presented.

He made several documentary films, in 1981 he received César prize for his film Reporter.

Since 1978 he has been a member of Magnum agency.
